On the occasion of World Children's Day, celebrated each year on 20 November, Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth has announced several initiatives designed to raise awareness of children’s rights.

World Children's Day commemorates the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child on 20 November 1959 and, 30 years later, that of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Convention defines 54 children's rights, including the right to life, health, education and the right to play, as well as the right to live with their parents, to be protected from violence and discrimination, to make their voices heard and more.

The ministry has announced the following awareness-raising initiatives to mark World Children’s Day.

Two Web Portals

The ministry’s Children’s Rights Service has launched a new portal, www.rights4kids.lu, to provide an overview of activities offered around World Children’s Day: workshops; conferences; themed evenings and activities for both children and adults; as well as numerous resources and useful information on children’s rights.

The portal www.staarkrechter.lu is aimed directly at children and young people, helping them to better understand their rights, explore the ten priority rights identified in Luxembourg, as well as offering access to resources and support contacts.

Third Edition of Children’s Book

The ministry also announced the third edition of the publication Den Arthur op Frupsmissioun (Arthur and the full-tummy brigade), written by Anja Di Bartolomeo and illustrated by Giulia Helminger. In a playful and educational way, it addresses the topic of nutrition and raises children’s awareness about the importance of making healthy and responsible choices. It also highlights the importance of physical activity for both physical and mental health. The story will soon be accessible on the ministry’s website in Luxembourgish, French and English.

Puppet Game: “Ten Fingers - Ten Rights”

The ministry announced the launch of a new playful and educational puppet game, to raise the awareness among children aged zero to four about their fundamental rights. The finger-puppet game “10 doigts - 10 droits” (Ten fingers - ten rights) was developed in close cooperation with ten partners from early childhood education and care services (Services d’éducation et d’accueil pour jeunes enfants - SEAJ), offering an entertaining and accessible way for children to discover and understand their rights while developing imagination and expression.

Fifth Edition of “Deng Zukunft – Deng Stëmm” Competition

The “Deng Zukunft – Deng Stëmm” (Your Future – Your Voice) competition is aimed at young people from cycles three and four of primary education, “maisons relais” (after-school care centres) and competence centres. This initiative is organised by UNICEF Luxembourg under the patronage of the ministry. Under the theme “Living better together with all our differences”, this fifth edition aims to give children the opportunity to express, in a creative way, their wishes and visions for an inclusive society where everyone finds their place, regardless of skin colour, origin, religion or social status.

Conference to Adress Healthy Habits

On Thursday 20 November 2025, the conference “Gesond iessen a sech méi beweegen an der Famill: jo, mee wéi?” (Eating well as a family, yes, but how?) will take place at the Cents community centre. It is organised by the ministry with UNICEF Luxembourg. Speakers will share concrete and accessible advice to help families adopt healthy eating and physical activity habits while taking everyday challenges into account.

A System to Monitor Children’s Rights

The government will introduce a monitoring system with 65 indicators to evaluate the situation of children’s rights in Luxembourg. It plans to publish the first national report in summer 2026.
