On Saturday 8 November 2025, the Grand Ducal Police issued a warning to the public about ATM scams across Luxembourg.

The police noted that they have been receiving an increasing number of reports of people being approached by suspected scammers at ATMs under false pretences.

For example, in Esch-sur-Alzette on Friday 7 November 2025, an unknown man asked an individual for help paying a parking fee. However, the victim did not get their bank card back from the parking machine. In the meantime, a four-figure sum was withdrawn using the victim's card.

On Saturday, several people in the south and west of the country also reported being approached by unknown men at ATMs. The scammers are believed to be trying to distract victims while they withdraw money or to steal their PIN code.

The police issued the following safety advice to members of the public:

  • always keep an eye on one's bank card and be cautious if approached by strangers while making a payment or cash withdrawal;
  • enter one's PIN discreetly;
  • if someone is being too pushy, ask them to keep their distance; if they do not comply, cancel the transaction;
  • be especially vigilant if one's card is not returned by the ATM when withdrawing money and a "friendly helper" offers assistance, asking one to re-enter the PIN;
  • report any suspicious individuals to the emergency police number 113.
