On Saturday 11 January 2025, Luxembourg's Prison Administration reported a fire had been contained at the Uerschterhaff Correctional Facility, located between Sanem and Mondercange.

The fire started during the evening of Friday 10 January at around 18:30.

According to the Prison Administration, the effective intervention of the prison officers on site enabled the fire to be brought under control in a very short time. No prisoners were injured and three officers underwent a routine medical check-up following the incident.

The management of Uerschterhaff Correctional Facility and the police were on the scene. The management of the Prison Administration and the Ombudsman in his capacity as external inspector of "places of deprivation of liberty" were immediately informed of the incident.

The technical police of the Criminal Investigation Department went to the scene and are conducting the investigation.

Due to the need to separate prisoners on remand and those who are convicted, the Uerschterhaff Correctional Facility is reserved for persons in pretrial detention. It houses male prisoners only and has a capacity for 400 people.
