On the afternoon of Tuesday 8 October 2024, the High Commission for National Protection (HCPN), MeteoLux, the Water Management Authority (AGE) and the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) issued a joint statement about the heavy rain warning in place for Wednesday 9 October 2024.
The weather warning has been upgraded from the previously announced yellow ("potential danger") status to orange ("danger").
The severe weather risk assessment unit (CERI) met on Tuesday afternoon to assess the weather situation and issued a heavy rain warning which could affect the whole of the country from 06:00 on Wednesday morning.
Continuous rain is expected over a 24-hour period, with accumulations of between 40 and 60 litres/m2 (or even more locally) and maximum intensity forecast from midday on Wednesday and overnight into Thursday, which could lead to flooding. AGE's flood forecasting service is monitoring the situation. There is a risk of flooding from Wednesday evening and a flood alert is "highly likely" to be activated.
The intensity of the rainfall is expected to diminish early on Thursday morning.
The authorities added that road traffic would likely be disrupted in the affected areas and asked motorists to adapt their driving and remain vigilant. The authorities also warned the public to be vigilant and to continually monitor the weather forecasts on the MeteoLux website.
The CERI were scheduled to meet again at the end of Tuesday afternoon.
