The Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO) has announced that it welcomed 3,953 visitors to its tourist office located at Place Guillaume II between Thursday 15 and Sunday 18 August 2024.

With 15 August falling on a Thursday this year, many people took advantage of Assumption Day to treat themselves to a long weekend, LCTO noted. Many visitors chose Luxembourg’s capital as their destination, confirming a trend already observed at Easter and Pentecost.

The 3,953 visitors represented an increase of 19.6% compared to the same period in 2023.

Regarding visitor origins, those from Germany represented 22.2% of the total, with 879 people, followed by 818 visitors from France, 671 visitors from the Netherlands, 208 visitors from Belgium and 200 Luxembourg residents. In short, nine out of ten visitors came from a European country.

The "Luxembourg jackets" have been roaming the streets of the capital every summer for 25 years to help visitors during their stay. This year, 23 young multilingual students aged eighteen to 25 answered questions from residents and visitors, distributed city maps and tourist brochures and managed flows at the entrances to tourist sites such as the Bock and Petrusse Casemates.

During the four days, they recorded an impressive total of 3,592 tourist contacts in the Upper Town of Luxembourg City, 50% more than during the same period in 2023.

On the streets, visitors from France were slightly more numerous with a total of 571 people, followed by 565 visitors from the Netherlands, 547 visitors from Germany, 162 Luxembourg residents and 118 from Belgium. Once again, nine out of ten visitors came from a European country.

Petrusse & Bock Casemates

Explorations of the Petrusse Casemates continue to be very successful, LCTO noted. Between 15 and 18 August 2024, the occupancy rate of available places was 97%.

The Casemates du Bock, accessible for self-guided tours since their reopening in June 2023, have regained their place as a must-see tourist attraction in the city of Luxembourg. From 15 to 18 August 2024, 5,232 visitors set off to explore the underground galleries dug into the Bock promontory.

Grand Ducal Palace

The exclusive guided tours of the Grand Ducal Palace always attract much interest, and the figures recorded during the Assumption weekend confirmed this. A total of 814 visitors took part in 37 guided tours, with an occupancy rate of 100%.

As a reminder, the guided tours will continue until 1 September 2024 inclusive. Tickets are still available online at luxembourg-city.com and the LCTO tourist reception office located at Place Guillaume II.

Guided tours

1,291 visitors discovered the most beautiful corners of the city with official guides from the City of Luxembourg, thanks to a varied programme of 75 guided tours organised by the LCTO over these four days. This included 62 guided tours with a personal guide and thirteen over-the-counter tours which took place throughout the weekend, including the "City Promenade", the "Wenzel Circuit" and the "Vauban Circuit".

Digital side

There was also a high traffic on the website, which recorded, between 15 and 18 August 2024, a total of 71,757 page views by 26,705 visitors, LCTO added.
