On Thursday 6 June 2024, the City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg – VdL) unveiled the renovated "Fiischen" monument, as announced recent in Chronicle.lu.
The restoration of famous monument of a fox (by Luxembourg sculptor Jean Curot (1882-1954) has been part of the recent redevelopment of Place Guillaume II in Luxembourg city centre; the original monument was inaugurated on 26 June 1932 in honour of the Luxembourg poet Michel Rodange (1827-1876). It refers to his main work, of which some extracts of text are engraved on the back of the monument
Michel Rodange published the satirical epic “Renert” (original: Renert or de Fuuß am Frack an a Ma'nsgrëßt), an adaptation of Goethe's fox epic “Reineke Fuchs” (Cotta edition of 1858) in the Luxembourgish language in 1872. The work became famous for its analysis revealing the particularities of the Luxembourg population, featuring the fox and its companions in regional and sub-regional dialects. It is one of the most important books ever published in Luxembourg.
The restoration project cost a total of €550,000.
