On Wednesday 17 January 2024, MeteoLux issued a weather bulleting at 14:00 in which it has downgraded its weather alert from Red to Orange.
Following the morning's freezing rain / black ice, driving and even walking in many parts of the Grand Duchy was treacherous. Temperatures have risen in parts to just above freezing, resulting in the precipitation that was forecast to fall as rain instead of as snow.
Temperatures are expected to continue to rise and not drop below freezing until the early hours of tomorrow, around 05:00. However, the threat of icy roads and footpaths has not been dismissed entirely as a small change in air temperature could plunge the country back into severe conditions as witnessed throughout the morning. The north of the country is forecast to remain one degree colder that the south of the country.
As a result, tonight's forecast precipitation is expected to continue to fall as rain until maybe around midnight when temperatures hover around freezing when the precipitation is expected then to fall as snow. At the same time, the wet ground could freeze over and, with snow covering ice, could lead to very dangerous conditions again.
Sccording to MeteoLux, 5cm of snow is expected to fall on Thursday morning, before midday.
