Recently, Chronicle.lu became aware of noise complaints made by several residents of the Kirchberg and Neudorf-Weimershof districts of Luxembourg City last weekend.

An anonymous source indicated that the complaints were made in relation to noise disturbances late into the night of Friday 10 June 2022. A number of residents allegedly contacted the Grand Ducal Police to complain about the noise and were informed that the authorities had given their permission for an open-air beach party in Luxembourg-Kirchberg. Further complaints followed in relation to noise on the evening of Saturday 11 June 2022.

Some residents also contacted Fonds Kirchberg, the public establishment responsible for the urbanisation and development of the Kirchberg plateau, about the noise made during the weekend in question. With the Fête de la Musique (music festival) set to take place from 16 to 21 June 2022 in Luxembourg City (and in various other towns and cities in the country), certain residents expressed their concern that a similar situation would develop (even on week nights), thus once again impacting their own sleep and health but particularly that of children living in the district.

Following reports of these noise complaints, Chronicle.lu reached out to both the Grand Ducal Police (awaiting comment) and Fonds Kirchberg.

Marc Widong, Director of Fonds Kirchberg, confirmed that the urbanisation fund had received some noise complaints from residents over loud music last weekend. On behalf of Fonds Kirchberg, he stated: “We regret the inconvenience caused to the neighbourhood, but the responsibility clearly lies with the concert organiser. As Fonds Kirchberg, we give our authorisation as the owner of the land, but our authorisation clearly states that other ‘réglements’ and laws must be observed. We have reminded the organisers of upcoming events of this general point and in particular of the noise during nighttime”.

Mr Widong added that the district management team of Fonds Kirchberg had received many requests for activities on the Kirchberg plateau this summer. “This shows that there is a huge demand for people spending a nice evening outside, after two years of COVID-19 restrictions”, he noted.

Nevertheless, he assured that Fonds Kirchberg cares about residents and “take[s] this subject very seriously”, adding that it will meet with the Mayor of Luxembourg City next week “to clarify the rules for the upcoming events in order to find a viable compromise between the desire to party and the obvious need to rest at night”.
