According to the national statistical institute, STATEC, the Luxembourg resident population reached 645,397 as of 1 January 2022, of which 341,230 residents were counted as Luxembourgish nationals, representing 52.87% of the total population - marginally higher than 52.83% a year before.

Among the 341,230 Luxembourg nationals who are resident, 62,925 people had at least one additional nationality, data communicated by STATEC showed.

In 2017, there were 21,395 Luxembourgish nationals with at least one additional nationality representing 6.9% of all resident Luxembourgish nationals (309,170), whilst this increased to 18.4% in 2022 - nearly one in five, and nearly a threefold increase since 2017.

In absolute terms, the 21,395 Luxembourgish nationals with at least one additional nationality in 2017 increased to 62,925 in 2022, also nearly a threefold increase and an exceptional average increase of 24% annually.

Of the 62,925 Luxembourgish nationals with at least one additional nationality in 2022, 47,522 (75.5%) had a second nationality of a European Union (EU27) country whilst 15,403 (24.5%) had a second nationality from outside the EU27.

Portuguese was the most popular additional EU27 nationality among Luxembourgers, followed by French, Italian, Belgian and German. Among Luxembourgers with a second nationality from the rest of the world, that of Montenegro was most popular, followed by the United Kingdom, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Cape Verde.

As of 31 December 2021, an additional 108,386 people with Luxembourgish nationality were non-residents, according to data from the Government IT Centre (Centre des technologies de l'information de l'État - CTIE).
