Luxembourg's Prison Administration has announced that a fire broke on Thursday afternoon at the Centre pénitentiaire de Luxembourg (CPL), otherwise known as Schrassig Prison.
At around 15:30 on Thursday 3 March 2022, guards at Schrassig Prison detected a fire. Prison officers quickly brought the fire under control and rescued a prisoner from his cell.
According to the Prison Administration, an inmate had set his cell on fire. He suffered second-degree burns to his hands and face. He was taken care of by the SAMU emergency medical service, which ensured his transfer to the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL). Five prison officers and a psychiatric nurse inhaled smoke and were due for routine medical checks.
The management of Schrassig Prison, the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) and the Grand Ducal Police were on the scene. The prison management and the Ombudsman in her capacity as external controller of places of deprivation of liberty were immediately informed of the incident. The technical police of the judicial police service is leading the investigation.
