The Grand Ducal Police have confirmed that, on Saturday 24 July 2021 shortly before 15:00, residents in Beggen reported that the water in the River Alzette had a surface film.

Upon investigation, it was determined that the pollution came from the former Arcelor site. As a result of recent flooding, a cellar room with a heating oil tank was flooded and the mixture spilled over the outdated sewer system into the river.

The water management office was informed and initiated the necessary measures.

In the last few days there has been a number of such incidents of pollution as residents emptied their cellars, which were contaminated with oil due to the flood, into adjacent streams. The Grand Ducal Police have advised residents to refrain from doing this and to inform the water management office via the emergency number (tel: 112) and they will then initiate the necessary measures to limit the damage to the environment.
