Luxembourg's government cabinet approved a bill yesterday authorising municipal buildings other than the town hall to accommodate wedding and civil partnership ceremonies during the ongoing state of emergency linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At Monday's meeting, the cabinet approved a derogation from Article 75 of the Civil Code allowing registrars to officiate marriages and civil partnerships in other municipal buildings for the duration of and twelve months following the state of emergency.

Due to social distancing measures imposed by the government, the organisation of wedding and civil partnership ceremonies with a maximum of 20 people in town halls has proven challenging given the insufficient size of the rooms available.

In this context, Luxembourg's Minister of Justice Sam Tanson and Minister of the Interior Taina Bofferding recently proposed that such ceremonies could be held, temporarily, in other municipal buildings. It will be up to the college of mayors and aldermen to determine which buildings can serve this function; the final decision requires the approval of the Interior Minister.
