The number of people applying for international protection (asylum) in Luxembourg in September 2019 fell to 158, down from 183 the previous month and from 210 in September 2018.

To date, 1,536 people have applied for asylum in Luxembourg so far this year, compared to 1522 by September 2018 and 1,740 by September 2017.

Africa represented the continent with the largest number of asylum seekers (69), with 34 coming from Eritrea alone. 64 applicants came from Asia (24 from Syria alone), 18 from Europe (eight from Albania) and seven from the Americas (five from Venezuela and two from Colombia). So far in 2019, most applicants (420) have come from Eritrea, followed by Syria (197) and Afghanistan (122).

In total, 199 decisions on asylum applications were taken during September 2019, with 51 gaining refugee status. To date in 2019, a total of 1,746 decisions have been taken resulting in 513 refugees being granted asylum in Luxembourg.
