On the occasion of International Youth Day, celebrated on 12 August, STATEC has gathered statistics on young residents of Luxembourg.
According to a recent report by Luxembourg's statistical agency, 169,851 young people under 25 lived in Luxembourg as of 1 January 2019; they represent 27.7% of the total population.
Of the 169,851 young people under 25, 94,853 were of Luxembourgish nationality (55.8%), whilst the other 74,998 had a different nationality (44.2%). There were slightly more young men (51.3%) than young women, a trend that applied to both Luxembourgish and foreign nationals.
Since the 2011 census, the share of 0-24 year olds in the total population has been steadily decreasing, from 29.4% to 27.7% on 1 January 2019. In the Luxembourgish population (those with the nationality), this share remained more or less stable (around 29.5%). Among foreigners, however, the decrease in the share of young people is much more pronounced, having dropped from 29.0% to 25.7% between 2011 and 2019.
In addition, the number of young people getting married has consistently decreased over the years. Among the 1,896 people who got married in 2018, 247 were younger than 25, including 156 women and 91 men. In total, 8.2% of women under 25 got married as opposed to 4.8% of young men. Regarding births, 505 babies out of a total of 6,274 births were born to mothers aged 25 or under.
Concerning immigration, 32.9% of Luxembourg's 24,644 immigrants were under the age of 25 in 2018. The highest numbers were found among children aged four and under as well as those aged 17 and over.
Finally, 4.7% of young people were unemployed last year. This represents a slightly higher rate than unemployed 25-54 year olds (4.5%). Unemployment was higher among young men (5.5%) than their female counterparts (3.8%) in the 15-24 age group.
