On Tuesday 1 March 2016, Minister for Equal Opportunities, Lydia Mutsch, visited Mertert to participate in a public exchange of views between local men and women on the theme of female representation in decision-making bodies.
During the meeting, which was organised by the Committee for Equal Opportunities, Lydia Mutsch presented Bill n°6892 which provides for the introduction of a legal quota of 40% female representation for parliamentary elections and 50% for European ones. Minister Mutsch also spoke of the national mobilisation campaign designed to achieve a better balance between men and women in local councils in Luxembourg after the next local elections to be held in 2017. Representing only 12.4% of mayors in Luxembourg, women are still largely under-represented at the level of communal political decision-making.
In a similar vein, the Minister also highlighted government efforts to improve the presence of women in economic decision-making, which has seen 35.97% of women appointed on boards of public institutions and private enterprises in which the State holds an interest.
During the general discussion, it was said that the municipalities and the advisory committees held an important role to be played regarding policy between men and women at the municipal level.
