It may not have been a white Christmas, but January looks set to make up for it with the first heavy snowfall of 2016 hitting Luxembourg yesterday.
Snow began to fall on Thursday 14 January 2016, with around 6cm falling overnight. Motorway speed limits were also reduced yesterday to cope with the changing weather, to 90 km/h.
Temperatures are expected to remain in negative figures over the weekend, with the lowest forecasted temperature of -6°C overnight on Sunday. More snow is anticipated until Monday.
The snow has already begun to create problems on the road, with the Grand Ducal Police reporting yesterday afternoon that the number of rear-end collisions had started to occur nationwide. The N4 between Steinbrücken and Leudelange was blocked at around 15:00, with a bus and two trucks unable to move due to slippery road conditions.
The police reminded the public that it is forbidden to drive in winter conditions with summer tyres, and the owners of non-compliant tyres would be fined €74.
