A fire which took place in a house in Munschecker, near Grevenmacher, in the early hours of this morning could have been the result of an arson attack, the Grand Ducal Police have today reported.
At around 03:30 in the morning of Monday 16 November 2015, a house in Duerfstrooss, Munschecker, became engulfed in flames. The house was inhabited at the time by a family of six, who all luckily managed to escape to safety. There were no fatalities, but the father was reported to have sustained burns to his arms from trying to put out the flames.
The fire is thought to have originated in the basement of the house. The police report also revealed that the front door of the house had been sprayed with a swastika, leading to the Luxembourg public prosecutor ordering the Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a full check of the crime scene.
Whilst evidence at the scene did reportedly suggest arson, further investigations are being launched in order to assess the background of the Nazi insignia on the door and whether the incident should be treated as a possible hate crime.
