On Friday, the cabinet of the Luxembourg government agreed to declare the Griechten area straddling the Käerjeng and Garnich municipalities as a protected area of ??national interest, as a nature reserve area.
The reclassification of the Griechten area is part of the national policy for the protection of nature as fixed by the National Plan for the Protection of Nature from 2007.
The Griechten is located between the towns of Hautcharage and Hivange and comprises 204.79 hectares of land. The intent of the reclassification of the site is to preserve this landscape and this quaint and unique set of several canyons. Due to the specific microclimate of the gorge, the site hosts a number of rare plants and is visited by many species of birds that are protected in the Grand Duchy and the Community.
