On 23 September 2015, Luxembourg Minister for Equal Opportunities, Lydia Mutsch, attended the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the National Council of Women of Luxembourg (CNFL).

During her address, the Minister announced that the Government took an important step towards a more balanced gender distribution in politics during yesterday's Cabinet meeting.

The draft law implementing certain provisions of the 2015-2018 equality between men and women plan, demands a legal quota of 40% of candidates from each gender on the lists to be submitted by political parties for national and European elections, with failure to comply subsequently affecting the public funding of these parties.

The proposed legislation also amends the Labour Code in three respects, namely the simplification of the procedure for receiving financial incentives for hiring a work of the under-represented sex; the specification of the conditions for being subsidised under the 'positive actions' programme, with respect to equal pay between men and women and the level of decision making; and the application of the principle of equal pay between men and women.
