Despite reaching a quarter of the required signatures in just over a week, Petition N°524 calling for the legalisation of the possession and consumption of cannabis has failed to reach the 4,500 signatures required for the matter to be discussed at the Chamber of Deputies.
In his application, petition initiator Patrick Pereira claimed that the properties of cannabis meant that is often seen as a hard drug, when instead it should be considered akin to other 'normalised' products with addictive properties such as coffee and tobacco and hold an equal right to legalisation.
It appeared initially that a large percentage of the Luxembourg population agree with this statement, with the petition receiving 1,125 signatures and counting just over a week after being opened to signatures on Thursday 30 July 2015. However, the signing process soon began to slow, and the electronic petition drew to a close yesterday having been signed less than 2,000 times.
Several other petitions also failed to make it to Parliament yesterday with far fewer votes, including the request to legalise the use of dashcams in vehicles in the Grand Duchy and the petition calling for a referendum to incorporate the Red Lion into the Luxembourgish national flag.
