Luxembourg's Ministry of Sports, together with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Diversity, inaugurated the exhibition “From Passion to Purpose: Celebrating Women in Sports” at the Coque on Friday 24 January 2025, on the occasion of International Women’s Sports Day.
The exhibition honours women who shape sport in Luxembourg, whether they are athletes, referees, volunteers or managers. Through inspiring portraits and testimonies, it celebrates their commitment, their passion and their impact on the development of sport at the national and international level.
At the opening, Luxembourg's Minister of Sports, Georges Mischo, recalled that sport represents a microcosm of our society that has a lasting influence on our living together, by promoting inclusion, solidarity and mutual respect. Indeed, through the values it conveys, sport brings together individuals from all backgrounds, promotes equal opportunities and strengthens social ties. In this context, the Minister also highlighted the ongoing efforts to develop a national gender equality strategy.
The Minister of Gender Equality and Diversity, Yuriko Backes, stressed: “While today we celebrate the impressive achievements of many women in sport, we must also recognise that there is still work ahead of us. We must break down the barriers that slow down women and girls, ensure fair representation of women's sports in the media and, of course, raise awareness for equal pay. We are working actively and effectively with the Ministry of Sports to improve this situation and we are determined to celebrate women's sport every day through this approach.”
A traveling exhibition
The exhibition, visible at the Coque until the beginning of March, will then travel to various Luxembourg municipalities (on request) to raise awareness and promote the place of women in sport beyond this symbolic day.
Discover the background
Each portrait presented in the exhibition is accompanied by a QR code allowing access to videos telling the unique stories of these women, their transition from passion to a true vocation.
With this initiative, the two ministries wish not only to pay tribute to women in sport, but also to inspire future generations to get involved in all sporting roles.
