International Contemporary Miniature Art Exhibition Opens at CAW in Walferdange

Local non-profit organisation Musel Link asbl is organising a new international exhibition of contemporary miniature art at the CAW gallery in Walferdange; the "Agenda 22/XXI - Extracts from intimate diaries of the 21st century" exhibition will run from 11 November to 11 December 2022.

Fifteen artists from Luxembourg, Germany, Stockholm (Sweden) and Los Angeles (US) are exhibiting fifteen authentic and intimate views of moments experienced during the past 22 years of our coexistence on this planet.

Throughout the second half of the 20th century, countless speculations about the 21st century frantically followed one another. Projections of all kinds attempted to capture images of the future which, from our human dimension, seemed distant. We are now 22 years into this "new" millennium. The number 22 is a palindrome which can be read in both directions. It is also said that 22 is a mirror number: it reflects the number 2, the symbol of duality, thus creating a double duality. Two worlds that exist in parallel and reflect each other: the outer world and our inner world.

For "Agenda 22/XXI - Extracts from intimate diaries of the 21st century", the artists were invited to base their creations on moments, emotions, events or impressions which have affected them during these first 22 years of the 21st century and to summarise them in a miniature format - 22 years in the palm of the hand.

The miniature works establish a frontal and intimate exchange as they force spectators to come closer to apprehend them in all their delicacy and fragility. It is a gentle way of forcing viewers to observe closely and then immerse themselves in the artwork in an intimate moment of self, thus opening the way to unexplored fields of perception.

The works presented here should fit in one hand: the maximum dimensions of two-dimensional works are 7.5x10cm, in a frame of up to 15x18cm. Three-dimensional works should not exceed 10x10x10cm. Video artworks are limited to a maximum duration of one minute.

The artists invited to lend themselves to this exercise come from various backgrounds, belong to different generations and express themselves in a variety of visual art mediums. For some, as the young Luxembourg photographer Tom Faber explained, the 22 years of this century represent the largest part of their existence. For others, the proportion is rather reversed - as for Marie-Josée Kerschen, recently named Knight of the Order of Merit of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg for her commitment to the service of culture in Luxembourg, and Ursula-Maren Fitz, an artist from the Munich region in Germany. Whilst Tom playfully presents the different stages he experienced from childhood to adulthood, Marie-Josée pays a vibrant tribute to loved ones who have left the earthly dimension and Ursula reveals a harrowing human vulnerability. On the other hand, the gazes of Franck Miltgen and Marie-Pierre Kirpach-Speltz, both from Luxembourg, and Dani Dodge and Nancy Ivanhoe from Los Angeles, turn in a variety of ways to nature.

Seven of the participating artists represent Luxembourg: Ivana Cekovic, Tom Faber, Marie-Josée Kerschen, Marie-Pierre Kirpach-Speltz, Franck Miltgen, Yann Ney and Neckel Scholtus. Representing Germany are Tobias Sternberg and Nathalie Tafelmacher from Berlin and Ursula-Maren Fitz from Munich. At the invitation of Tobias Sternberg, Petter Krueger is joining from Stockholm and, from the West Coast of the United States (Los Angeles), the exhibition welcomes the works of Dani Dodge, Jenny Hager, Nancy Ivanhoe and Gay Summer Rick.

Opening hours: Thursday and Friday from 15:00 to 19:00; Saturday and Sunday from 14:00 to 18:00. Guided tours every Sunday at 15:00.
During the Walfer Bicherdeeg, on 19 and 20 November 2022, the exhibition will be open to the public from 10:00 to 18:00. The exhibition will come to a close on Sunday 11 December 2022 at 14:00. Free entry.

Musel Link asbl was founded in Luxembourg in 2015 by six artists and a lawyer with the aim of promoting artists from Luxembourg belonging to different generations both locally and internationally. By setting up the miMO (miniature MOnumentale or miniature MOselle) project, Musel Link seeks to give new impetus to international artistic communication. Active on the national and international cultural scene since 2016, the non-profit has produced major exhibitions in regional museums in Luxembourg, at Neumünster Abbey in Luxembourg-Grund, as well as in Stockholm and in Los Angeles.
