As part of the awareness campaign "Together against food waste" ("Ensemble contre le gaspillage alimentaire"), Luxembourg's Minister of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development, Romain Schneider, presented the pilot project "Frigo Anti-Gaspillage"(anti-waste fridge) in Tuntange, a town in the canton of Mersch, on Friday morning.

The anti-waste fridge is an initiative of Youth Hostel Hollenfels, with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development and the Helperknapp Municipal Administration. Its main purpose is to give a second chance to food leftovers, while actively fighting against food waste.

Indeed, the fight against food waste is at the heart of this innovative initiative which saw the design and installation of a self-service fridge at the "Veräinsbau" in Tuntange (4 Rue de Hollenfels). The fridge offers passersby surplus meals freshly prepared at Youth Hostel Hollenfels. Any resident, passerby, tourist or employee in the area can choose their meal and pay a minimum amount in the box next to the fridge. Information about the meals and the number sold will be published daily on the hostel's Facebook page.

This anti-food waste campaign aims to reduce the amount of organic waste by giving the cooked meals a second chance of consumption, offer people living or working in the area quality cooked meals at an attractive price, and offer a smart alternative to short food circuits.

Romain Schneider applauded the innovative initiative, emphasising the importance of stakeholders uniting in the fight against waste and that every effort be made to achieve the objectives of the national waste and resources plan (PNDGR), that is to say a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030. He added: "If we want to feed nine billion people by 2050, it is imperative to act, while having a responsible attitude towards our natural resources. As Minister of Agriculture, it is important to me that consumers value products from our region".
