After authorities identified cases of the H5N8 strain of bird flu in the Trier and Saarland regions in Germany, the Luxembourg Ministry of Agriculture has issued a reminder of the regulations in force since last November.
The Ministry notes that all professional bird keepers are obliged to keep their animals indoors, and private owners are urged to do the same in order to protect against infection by wild birds. Moreover, it is also forbidden to feed or water birds outdoors. Any unusual deaths must be reported immediately to the veterinary administration by phone, Tel: 24 78 25 39, or email: info@asv.etat.lu.
The Ministry said that to date the virus has not been detected in Luxembourg, and added that consumption of eggs or meat does not present a risk of infection for humans.
