The eighth summit of the European Political Community (EPC) brought together leaders from across Europe, including Luxembourg's Prime Minister Luc Frieden, in Yerevan, Armenia, on Monday 4 May 2026.

Held under the motto "Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe", the summit brought together the heads of state or government of more than 40 countries, including the Member States of the European Union (EU), to discuss ways to deepen cooperation, improve connectivity and strengthen economic and energy security.

The summit was co-chaired by António Costa, President of the European Council, and Nikol Pashinyan, Prime Minister of Armenia.

"Today's summit, in this region, shows that Europe's way of doing things – diplomacy, multilateralism and respect for international law – yields results, it yields peace," said President Costa. He described the meeting as "historic", noting that "for the first time the European Political Community meets here, in the South Caucasus", placing Armenia "in the heart of Europe, which is exactly where it belongs – in light of its long and rich history."

According to the Council, the European Political Community provided a platform for initial meetings that helped launch a peace process culminating in a historic agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

"That agreement is a story of peace in Europe that must be celebrated, in a world where escalation and war seem to dominate," said President Costa, who also emphasised the EU's readiness to work with Armenia and the region for peace and stability.

Prime Minister Luc Frieden, shared his insights on social media: "We met in Yerevan with partners who share our European values. We discussed ways to defend our democracies, strengthen our energy security and improve our connectivity. On all these priorities, dialogue is the way forward."

Among the guest participants was Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, marking the first participation of a non-European country at the summit. President Costa described this as "politically very significant" and "a reflection of the strong and growing alignment between Europe and Canada".

The meeting took place ahead of the first-ever EU-Armenia bilateral summit, scheduled from Monday 4 to Tuesday 5 May 2026.
