From Friday 13 to Saturday 14 February 2026, Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, and the Minister of Defence, Yuriko Backes, represented Luxembourg at the 62nd edition of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) in Munich, Germany.
According to the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, during the conference, Minister Bettel stated: “The Munich Security Conference takes place this year in a context of profound uncertainty: for Europe’s security, in a world marked by the multiplication of conflicts as well as global geopolitical and geoeconomic tensions. Faced with these challenges, our priority is clear: to strengthen European resilience, defend our values and preserve the unity of our alliances. In a more unstable world, defending the rules-based international order also requires strengthening our own capacity to act and our security. Dialogue and diplomacy, such as those made possible by this conference, are more important than ever.”
Alongside of the conference, Minister Bettel and Minister Backes held several bilateral meetings.
Together with the global organisation Women Political Leaders (WPL), Minister Backes organised a roundtable with women leaders from the political world on the topic “Turning Women, Peace and Security into Strategy”.
Held under the theme “Under Destruction”, this year’s edition of the MSC centred on shifts in the international order. “The theme of this conference, ‘Under Destruction’, reflects the reality that Europe and the world are facing. We are experiencing geopolitical upheavals and the rules-based international order is being questioned. We need a strong Europe, within a stable Alliance, based on shared values, with equal partners on both sides of the Atlantic,” stated Minister Backes.
