On Friday 12 December 2025, the sound of jingle bells and joyful laughter filled the air along Massachusetts Avenue in Washington DC, as the Luxembourg Embassy in the US opened its doors to children and families for one of the most cherished traditions of the Grand Duchy: the visit of Kleeschen, also known as Saint Nicholas.
With Christmas fast approaching, the Embassy was transformed into a festive haven, glowing with warmth, anticipation and holiday cheer. For the children in attendance, the excitement was unmistakable as they eagerly awaited the arrival of their beloved "Saint Nick" for an evening filled with magic, treats and timeless traditions.
This year's celebration was particularly special, beginning with invitations that seemed to come straight from the heart of the season itself. Issued from the desk of Kleeschen, the message was addressed to "Luxembourgers and Friends of Luxembourg" and conveyed that, following Saint Nicholas' own instructions, Ambassador Nicole Bintner-Bakshian and the Embassy team warmly invited families to attend and celebrate together.
Children of all ages had been counting down the days to this special occasion, which remains a highlight of the Christmas season for many families. For Luxembourgish children in particular, the visit of Kleeschen is a tradition eagerly awaited all year long, steeped in memories passed down through generations. Their patience was rewarded when Kleeschen made a very special stop at the Embassy during his journey across the ocean on his way to Luxembourg. True to tradition, he arrived bearing a large bag filled with gifts, chocolate treats and the much-loved Boxemännchen - the traditional Luxembourgish pastry that symbolises the celebration of Saint Nicholas Day and evokes a sense of home for many in attendance.
To welcome their distinguished guest, the children were dressed especially for the occasion, adding to the festive atmosphere with holiday outfits and bright smiles. Their cheerful performances filled the Embassy with laughter and joy, creating a heart-warming scene that delighted parents, Embassy staff and guests alike. The energy and enthusiasm of the children were contagious, and the moment felt like a true celebration of innocence, tradition and togetherness. In return, Kleeschen was greeted with enthusiastic applause and warm gestures that reflected the sincerity and happiness of the evening.
Ambassador Nicole Bintner-Bakshian extended a personal and heartfelt welcome to the children and their families, underscoring the importance of preserving Luxembourg's traditions abroad. Her remarks reflected the Embassy's commitment to fostering cultural continuity and strengthening community bonds, especially for younger generations growing up far from their ancestral homeland. She was assisted throughout the evening by the Embassy's leadership and staff, whose collective efforts ensured the smooth flow and overall success of the event. Deputy Chief of Mission Annabelle Dullin, along with other members of the Embassy team, greeted guests, guided families and attended to details large and small, creating an atmosphere that was both welcoming and festive.
The undisputed highlight of the evening, however, was Kleeschen himself. With his iconic red book in hand, he delighted the children by convincingly demonstrating that he knew whether they had been naughty or nice throughout the year. One by one, he spoke with the children, engaging them with warmth, humour and a gentle sense of wonder. Speaking in various languages, Kleeschen ensured that each child felt seen and included, a detail that resonated deeply in the diverse and international setting of Washington DC. His loving demeanour captivated the young audience, who listened attentively, responding with wide eyes, bright smiles and eager anticipation. An angel accompanied Kleeschen throughout the evening, helping to distribute gifts and adding an extra touch of magic to the experience.
Among the many touching moments of the evening, perhaps the most heart-warming was witnessing the children's pure joy - their laughter, excitement and unfiltered delight. Their radiant smiles felt like a gift in return to Kleeschen, a reminder that the true magic of the season lies in kindness, generosity, and shared happiness. These moments captured the essence of Christmas and left a lasting impression on everyone present.
The event was coordinated by Elisabeth Herndler, Social Secretary and Assistant to Ambassador Bintner-Bakshian, who ensured that every detail was carefully planned. From the festive ambiance to a delicious, child-friendly dinner menu enjoyed by all, her efforts contributed significantly to the success of the gathering and the comfort of the families attending.
Guests included members of the Luxembourg diaspora as well as friends of Luxembourg from across the Washington metropolitan area. Together, they celebrated a beloved tradition that bridged cultures and generations, reinforcing a strong sense of community far from home. The evening served not only as a celebration of Saint Nicholas but also as a reminder of the enduring bonds that connect people through shared heritage and traditions.
After spending time with the children and their parents, Kleeschen continued on his journey, leaving behind cherished memories and eager anticipation for his return next year. As the evening drew to a close, one thing was certain: Christmas had truly arrived at the Luxembourg Embassy, and the magic of Kleeschen once again brought warmth and joy to all who were fortunate enough to be there.
