On Thursday 20 March 2025, Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Xavier Bettel, received European Union Special Representative for the Sahel region, João Cravinho, for a working meeting in Luxembourg.
As reported by the Foreign Ministry’s Directorate for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Minister Bettel and Mr Cravinho discussed the situation in the Sahel, a region in which Luxembourg has been engaged for over 30 years, particularly through development cooperation. Minister Bettel emphasised the importance of continuing to support civilian populations, who are the primary victims of political and security instability in the region.
The ministries also recalled that Luxembourg has decided to suspend bilateral aid to Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger following the coups d'état in these countries, but remains committed on humanitarian and multilateral issues, as well as through support for civil society.
