On Monday 10 March 2025, Luxembourg’s Minister of Labour, Georges Mischo, and Minister of Health and Social Security, Martine Deprez, participated in the meeting of the Council of the European Union on Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs (EPSCO), which took in Brussels, Belgium.
A press release issued by the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Health and Social Security reported that, under the Polish Presidency, the ministers discussed with their counterparts how to alleviate labour and skills shortages due to the ageing population, dubbed the “grey revolution/transformation” by the Presidency. Minister Mischo indicated that, in Luxembourg, several measures have been taken to promote longer working lives.
The ministers adopted the Joint Employment Report 2025 and approved the Council conclusions on this report. In addition, the EPSCO Council approved its contribution on aspects of the recommendation on the economic policy of the euro area for 2025.
Minister Mischo participated in the ministerial working lunch on the right to disconnect, in which he explained that in Luxembourg, the law of 28 June 2023 introduced a mechanism on the right to disconnect in the Labour Code.
Ministers Mischo and Deprez also met with the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, Roxana Mînzatu, in charge of the "quality jobs, social rights, education, skills and preparation" portfolio, to discuss the revision of European Regulation 883/2004 on the coordination of social security systems. During these exchanges, the ministers recalled Luxembourg's position on this issue and stressed the importance of having a balanced text that takes into account the considerations of all Member States and, above all, that supports the professional reintegration of job seekers.
Minister Deprez also had a bilateral exchange with Korinna Schumann, Austria's new Federal Minister of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection. The meeting focused on priority issues in the areas of health and social security.
Minister Mischo also had a bilateral exchange with David Clarinval, Belgium's new Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labour, Economy and Agriculture, on priority issues for the two neighbouring countries.
