On Wednesday 4 December 2024, Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade announced that the Grand Duchy has provided Rwanda with medical equipment to help it fight the Marburg virus.

In response to the declaration of the Marburg virus disease (MVD) epidemic in Rwanda on 27 September 2024, and at the request of the Rwandan government within the framework of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, Luxembourg has made 330 pallets of personal protective equipment and medical devices available to Rwanda. Thanks to co-financing from the European Union, the equipment was delivered on Tuesday 3 December 2024 and received by local partners.

The contribution is aimed at consolidating the response efforts of the Rwandan health authorities in the fight against the virus. By mitigating the risk of the spread of communicable diseases and replenishing stocks of equipment, Luxembourg said it intends to contribute to protecting health workers in the field and strengthening public health worldwide.

The collection and transport of emergency supplies, donated by the Ministry of Health and Social Security, was coordinated by the Directorate for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs (within the Foreign Ministry), in close collaboration with the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS), private sector partners and the Embassy of Luxembourg in Rwanda.
