UK legislation that is due to come into force from Tuesday 16 January 2024 restores the electoral franchise to UK citizens who have been outside the UK for more than 15 years.

This will affect very many of the over 6,000 UK nationals, including well over 2,000 dual passport holders living in Luxembourg, of whom many with pensions or property interests pay taxes in the UK.

With the forthcoming UK General Election likely to take place as early as this May, political parties are urging UK nationals to take action to reclaim their voting rights.

Martin Bennett, chair of Liberal Democrats in Luxembourg, stated “Liberal Democrats Abroad has launched an information site for potential voters https://www.britsabroad.vote/ which provides details online for voter registration. This is not primarily a party issue, help is available for all voters; nonetheless, important political issues are at stake that matter to UK citizens in Luxembourg. These include the possibility of voting for a UK government that is openly fostering closer ties to the EU with better collaboration on matters of trade, education, security and protection of the environment.
