On Sunday 12 February 2023, Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs and the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) announced the deployment of an expert from Luxembourg to Turkey via the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM).
Following Turkey's request for assistance through the UCPM, which allows the European Commission to coordinate the deployment of rescue teams and the delivery of essential supplies to assist the Turkish and Syrian civilian population, Luxembourg has selected a logistics expert to support the European assistance efforts in the earthquake-affected area in Turkey.
Luxembourg had previously sent two members of the CGDIS Humanitarian Intervention Team (HIT) to the disaster area.
By sending a logistics expert, Luxembourg is contributing to the European effort to help the victims by assisting the European Union in the management and logistical coordination of teams, aid and goods sent to Turkey.
The Department of Civil Security of the Ministry of Home Affairs, in collaboration with the CGDIS, is coordinating the request for assistance and the related response through the emergency number 112, which is the direct contact of the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), the system through which requests for assistance via the UCPM are submitted.
