On Tuesday 28 May 2019, EU leaders met for an extraordinary meeting of the European Council to discuss the European Elections and launch the process of appointing new institution leaders.

On this occasion, Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel explained: "The aim of this informal meeting of the European Council is to make an initial assessment of the results of the European Elections and to have an exchange of views on how we, as European leaders, would like to see the appointment process unfold".

The Luxembourg leader added: "The election result is clear: Europe won. Citizens have come out in favour of a liberal, fair and sustainable European Union. And this must also be taken into account when distributing the posts of president".

The nomination process will lead the European Council to elect its President, propose a candidate for the post of President of the European Commission, appoint the President of the European Central Bank and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. To this end, the Heads of State and Government instructed President Donald Tusk to start consultations with the EU Member States and the European Parliament. This will prepare the ground and clarify all these positions by the June European Council meeting.
