At the invitation of Mikheil Janelidze, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, paid an official visit to Tbilisi on Wednesday 28 March 2018.

During his visit, Minister Asselborn was received in audience by Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, and met, in addition to his Georgian counterpart, Mikheil Janeliidze, the Vice President of Parliament, Tamar Chugoshvili.

While last year marked the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Grand Duchy and Georgia, Minister Asselborn's talks with the Georgian authorities provided an opportunity to review bilateral relations, with particular emphasis on strengthening mutually beneficial synergies in the field of trade and investment, reflecting the desire to reflect the excellence of political relations in the economic field.

In this context, Minister Asselborn expressed confidence that the recent accreditation of a non-resident ambassador to Luxembourg could contribute to further deepening bilateral relations. He also confirmed Luxembourg's intention to remain engaged in the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM). In this context, the Minister recalled Luxembourg's commitment to the territorial integrity of Georgia.

Discussions also focused on the internal political situation in Georgia, including the implementation of constitutional reform, the strengthening of democratic institutions and the consolidation of a pluralistic democratic system.

Minister Asselborn noted the progress made by Georgia, which continues to implement ambitious reforms to bring it closer to the European Union. He praised the Georgian authorities' willingness to implement the Association Agreement swiftly and comprehensively, and encouraged the government to pursue good governance efforts, a key area for attracting more foreign investment.

The discussions then focused on the latest developments in the region, as well as on relations with Russia, before being devoted to the issues of international political events as well as to strengthening cooperation in multilateral fora.​
