As a response to the deteriorating situation of the Rohingya community fleeing from violence in Myanmar, Luxembourg has confirmed that they will provide financial assistance to the amount of €750,000.
This amount is in addition to €200,000 to assit with humanitarian logistics. Luxembourg announced this financial assistance at an international donor's conference in Geneva, Switzerland on Monday 23 October.
Romain Schneider, Minister of Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, noted that "due to the scale of this crisis, the international community must come together to provide for the basic needs of these displaced people." The minister is most notably concerned regarding the precarious situation of children and other vulnerable people.
This humanitarian aid is the result of a collaboration between various humanitarian organisations such as Luxembourg's Worldwide Food Programme (PAM), the United Nation's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and an NGO in Bangladesh. Luxembourg is also supporting the creation of a coordination hub to help the humanitarian community on site to better organise the provision of emergency aid to those in need.
Luxembourg is also financially supporting the humanitarian work of the International Commitee of the Red Cross in Myanmar and not forgetting the the Luxembourgish government also annually provides to the Central Emercency Response Fund (CERF) which allows the UN to rapidly provide help to those affected by crises.
