On Tuesday 15 November 2016, Luxembourg's Minister of the Environment, Carole Dieschbourg, will represent the Grand Duchy at the COP22 meeting in Marrakesh in Morocco.
This 22nd meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP22) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is being held from 7 to 18 November; Minister Dieschbourg will attend the ministerial session.
The purpose of COP22 will be to clarify the rules for the implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement, to review the commitments of countries, as well as non-state actors, to reduce their gas emissions, to tackle the effects of climate change and their adaptation measures and to take stock of promises made to developing countries in terms of climate finance.
More than 20,000 participants are expected in Marrakesh, including several heads of state and government, including delegations of the 196 States, civil society - companies, NGOs, scientists, local authorities, indigenous peoples, trade unions - and representatives of the media from all over the world.
The Paris Climate Agreement adopted on 12 December 2015 after the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UNFCCC entered into force on 4 November 2016, less than a year after its adoption. The threshold required for the entry into force of the agreement was 55 countries covering at least 55% of greenhouse gas emissions, currently 103 countries are included, including Luxembourg. The aim of the Paris agreement is to keep the global average temperature much lower than 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to continue its efforts to limit it to 1.5°C.
