On Friday 14 October 2016, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel attended the Maison du Luxembourg’s 10 year celebrations in Thionville.
During the celebrations, the Prime Minister unveiled a commemorative plaque for the Maison du Luxembourg’s 10th anniversary. In his speech, PM Bettel congratulated the association’s founders for their excellent initiative which has brought France and Luxembourg closer together. He highlighted the great relations between Luxembourg and the Thionville region, declaring that “Here we experience the European Union and its benefits on a daily basis. Without the European Union and freedom of movement, this harmony between Lorraine and Luxembourg would not be possible.”
PM Bettel went on to describe the cross-border relations as being the origin of a win-win situation in which Luxembourg and its economy benefit from Lorraine’s workforce, with more than 90,000 French cross-border workers coming over each day. Likewise, Lorraine benefits from Luxembourgish workers crossing the border. The Prime Minister specified that the 90,000 employees is approximately double the amount of employees of Renault in France, or they correspond to all the employees of Total worldwide, thus making Luxembourg one of the biggest employers for people from Lorraine.
The Prime Minister concluded with the confident message that there is a bright future ahead for relations between Lorraine and Luxembourg.
The Maison du Luxembourg gives guidance to French residents searching for information regarding employment conditions in Luxembourg. It also helps them with steps such as looking for a job, finding information regarding labour laws, social legislation, loans, teaching and learning Luxembourgish, as well as the cultural and touristic side of Luxembourg.
