On Thursday 14 January 2016, a warrant officer from the Luxembourg Army returned home after six months spent as a training non-commissioned officer (NCO) as part of the EUTM Mali programme.
EUTM Mali was established on 19 February 2013 as a military mission of the European Union to contribute to the training of the Malian armed forces (EUTM Mali).
In November 2015, Luxembourg pledged to support France's presence in Mali to allow it to focus on the fight against Daech in Syria following the ISIS-led terrorist attacks on Paris on 13 November. Luxembourg doubled its military presence in Mali from January 2016 and will be providing France with 20 hours of annual flying under the NATO-managed Strategic Airlift Interim Solution (SALIS) programme.
The Luxembourg Army is also now present in Kosovo.
