Minister for Immigration and Asylum, Jean Asselborn, will convene the extraordinary 'Justice and Home Affairs' Council taking place on 22 September 2015 in Brussels under the Luxembourg Presidency of the EU Council.
The extraordinary JHA Council has been organised as a follow-up to the 14 September 2015 meeting, whereby the Council formally adopted a two-year 'temporary and exceptional' mechanism establishing the voluntary relocation of 40,000 asylum seekers throughout the EU.
At the 14 September meeting, the Ministers present also discussed the proposal made on 9 September 2015 by President of the Commission Jean-Claude Juncker to provide the emergency relocation of 120,000 refugees from Greece, Hungary and Italy, to draft a permanent relocation mechanism involving all EU Member States, and a shared EU list of safe countries of origin to hasten the international protection process.
The adoption of a Decision concerning the provisional mechanism for the relocation of 120,000 asylum-seekers will be at the forefront of discussions on 22 September, with the aim of easing the migratory pressure on certain Member States.
