Luxembourg Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, was in Brussels today to chair the 'General Affairs' Council of the European Union.
To begin, the Luxembourg Presidency presented the work programme for the duration of the Grand Duchy's mandate, which will last until 31 December 2015. Ministers then took stock of the preparations for the European Council on 15 and 16 October 2015, which will tackle the specific challenges posed by the migration crisis.
"Europe has a not only moral, but equally legal, duty to assist refugees who have fled war, terror and dictatorship," stated Minister Asselborn, Foreign Minister of Luxembourg and President of the Council. "The Luxembourg Presidency will do its utmost to ensure that the EU respects its values".
To conclude, the ministers addressed the annual programme on the basis of the letter of intent of the President and Vice-President of the Commission regarding the work programme for 2016.
