On Monday and Tuesday this week, Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, has been in Berlin, Germany.
At the invitation of Foreign Minister of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Minister Asselborn also met with the Minister of State for European Affairs, Michael Roth.
Ministers Asselborn and Steinmeier discussed several avenues to strengthen the already excellent cooperation between the two partners in multilateral institutions such as the United Nations (UN), NATO and the European Union (EU) on foreign policy issues, illustrating the strong support of the multilateral approach shared by the German Federal Republic and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and the importance of the common struggle for the promotion of shared values such as human rights and the rule of law.
The discussions of the ministers also addressed the major issues of the international politics, by including information on the current situation in Ukraine as well as on relations between the European Union and Russia.
Discussions with Minister of State Roth focused on preparations and priorities of the Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the European Union, in particular the General Affairs Council proceedings (AGC), to ensure good coordination between the Luxembourg and Germany within the EU. Minister Asselborn and Minister of State Roth reported a broad consensus on most of the issues that will dominate the agenda of the European Union in the coming months.
During his working visit to Berlin, Minister Asselborn also visited the German Bundestag in order to present the key points of the Luxembourg Presidency program of the EU Council to the parliamentary group of German Social Democrats (SPD).
