Details:

Annie Dorsen from New York City, a pioneer of algorithmic theatre, will be in Luxembourg-Grund at Abbaye de Neumünster (neimënster) on Thursday 11 January 2024 at 19:00, at the invitation of the Pierre Werner Institute with the support of the Saarland University.

She will discuss with Luxembourg director Anne Simon about artificial intelligence, ChatGPT and the future of the arts. Dorsen and Simon are renowned theatre directors who will give an overview of their work and reflect on questions such as: How will digitalisation and algorithms shape our future, especially that of theatre?

The discussion and media presentation will be moderated by Johannes Birgfeld from Saarland University. Entry is free, but registration is recommended.

Digitalisation and algorithms, ChatGPT and AI increasingly dominate visions of our future. Their influence on the theatre of tomorrow is a subject of exploration. It may evolve with chatbots taking the stage, algorithms writing live, and actresses sharing only a digital space. The theatrical experience in an augmented reality opera may await. This exchange will delve into this new future of theatre, with two innovative theatre makers who are already measuring its potential through their work, which will be presented and discussed.

Annie Dorsen, born in 1973 in New York City, trained at Yale University (BA) and the Yale School of Drama (MA), is one of the international pioneers of a theatre that thematises artificial intelligence and the growing importance of algorithms, and that also uses them consistently for the development and design of new stage works. Hello Hi There (2010), A Piece of Work (2013), Yesterday Tomorrow (2015), The Great Outdoors (2017), The Slow Room (2018) or Infinite Sun (2019) as well as Dorsen's essays, notably On Algorithmic Theatre (2012) are examples for thinking about theatre working with AI and algorithms.

Anne Simon, born in 1982, studied at Royal Holloway College, University of London. She is one of the key directors of the moment in Luxembourg (among others Ensemble Devised Work, Trail of Crumbs, NYC, 2015; Zack Braff, All New People, 2016; Elise Schmit, So dunkel hier, 2021). More than ten years ago, she had already experimented with live theatre in two places connected only by the Internet (the@trelove impossible, 2011) or written monologues for an actor and his six robots (Prometheus: We are the gods now, 2012). During lockdown, live plays were created in the digital space. Anne Simon develops immersive theatre concepts. She is a main mediator of English-speaking dramaturgy in Luxembourg and is currently developing the augmented reality opera Opera Go.
