Details: The Headhunters are one of only a handful of bands which can claim to have changed the sound of jazz. In ”Head Hunters”, the album for which Herbie Hancock brought the group together in 1973, jazz mingles with funk with the occasional sally into rock. Three years after Miles Davis’s ”Bitches Brew”, and in the same year as ”Sweetnighter” by Weather Report, Head Hunters broke into the scene like a fly-bitten bull. With songs like ”Sly” (a homage to Sly Stone and his family, among the instigators of funk), or ”God make me funky”, a song which was later extensively sampled by hip hop, the Headhunters draw out the essence of jazz and enhance it with Afro-Caribbean and jazz fusion influences, resulting from the inclusion of electronic instruments, between the electronic pianos and other synths of Hancock.
Nowadays, the line-up has changed extensively, but the old determination to mix the genres still endures. The band’s latest album, Platinium, features tracks which is a mixture of jazz fusion and hip hop: their track featuring Snoop Dogg and George Clinton on D-Funk (Funk with us) perhaps best represents their persistent creative streak. Definitely one of the great bands – not to be missed. Doors open at 20.00.
