On Sunday 14 July 2019, Bee Together, SIAS and LIST will be holding an introductory course in English on the butterflies of Luxembourg.
The aim of the course is to train new volunteers to submit data to the national database for biodiversity, which will be used to monitor butterfly distribution and abundance. This is important as flying insect numbers continue to decline.
The theoretical component will take place in the morning, followed by a break for a picnic lunch (participants bring their own). If the weather is favourable, participants will then visit a local site to catch, identify and release butterflies. As butterflies are protected in Luxembourg, the team will obtain an authorisation to catch them.
The theoretical component will cover:
1. History of butterfly research in Luxembourg;
2. National database for recording biodiversity;
3. Monitoring methodology;
4. Differences between moths and butterflies;
5. Overview of butterfly families;
6. Determination of butterflies to species level.
The event will run from 09:00 until 16:00 and the venue in Syren will be communicated to those who have registered.
There is no cost for the event although donations are appreciated based on the principle of Pay What You Wish. The money collected from the event will be used to benefit pollinators.
