Details: In addition to private schooling in English in Luxembourg, the Luxembourg school system has been providing English-language secondary schooling for a couple of years. This programme allows students with an excellent command of English to follow academically challenging and balanced secondary studies in English - focusing on languages and sciences – which thoroughly prepares them for university studies and their future careers. IB World School: The Athénée acquired the status of IB World School in February 2010, which means that it is authorised to offer the IBDP and to host the two final diploma years starting September 2010. The IB offered at the Athénée de Luxembourg is recognised by the legislator as equivalent to the Luxembourgish school-leaving certificate (Diplôme de fin d'études secondaires). The Athénée offers a 4-year study programme which encompasses two different levels: Following the two preparation years (10th grade and 11th grade) students will enter the actual IB Diploma Programme (12th and 13th grade). Although they may join the programme in grades 10, 11 or 12, the school advises those coming from the regular Luxembourgish school system to join the programme for grade 10. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in itself is a demanding two-year international programme for highly motivated students and leads to a qualification recognised by leading universities around the world: students take a challenging liberal arts course of studies and pass examinations in six academic subjects. Additionally, students must take the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course that investigates the nature of knowledge in various disciplines, to participate in at least 150 hours of Creativity, Action, Service (CAS), to undertake original research, and to write a 4,000-word Extended Essay. Subjects taught in the IB Diploma Programme at the Athénée: Group 1: English A (Literature) HL and SL Group 2: French B HL and SL Group 3: Individuals and Societies (Economics HL and SL / History HL and SL) Group 4: Experimental Sciences (Biology HL and SL / Chemistry HL and SL / Physics HL and SL) Group 5: Mathematics HL and SL Group 6: The Arts and Electives (Visual Arts HL and SL, German B HL and SL, French A (Literature) or German A (Literature) as a self-taught language on SL or another subject from groups 3 or 4) NB: The school reserves the right to cancel a subject in case of insufficient numbers. Entry requirements In order to be admitted to grades 10, 11, or 12 in September 2013, students need an excellent command of English. In addition, each applicant will have to sit an admission test (English, French and Mathematics for grade 10; English, French, Experimental sciences and Mathematics for grades 11 and 12). All applications will be treated individually, on the basis of each student’s portfolio. The tests take place at the Athénée either on 22/23 May 2013 or on 8/9 July 2013 at 08:00. An additional session may be organised on 12/13 September 2013 (unless all classes are full). Each candidate may participate in two different sessions only. The application forms ad hoc can be downloaded from the website: http://www.al.lu/tele.html. The application procedure started on 1 December 2012. Applications for the next school year will be accepted until 1 September 2013.
