Indjaran Touareg Musical Troupe

The name Indjaran is derived from a major river at the entrance of the Tadrart region near the small oasis city of Djanet, east of Tamanrasset. Here the dunes, as tall as buildings, were once travelled by heavily saddled camels laden with spices, salt and tea and guided by the nomadic Touareg people. The Touareg predominantly inhabit the Saharan parts of Algeria, Niger and Mali, moving continuously across national borders. The Tuareg language is spoken by around 1.2 million people.

In 2004, singer and oud player Malek Chakali decided to gather together several young musicians from the group Imaran, which was created in 1989 by singer, oud player, composer, poet, and also Malek's eldest brother, Ahmed. Indjaran, which translates to mean 'friends', rose out of this union and the group has become the spokesperson for traditional Touareg music, having now released four albums. The band has performed at festivals from Djanet in Algeria to the Libyan border, and now 12 of the troupe's youngest members aged between 18 and 30 will be received in Luxembourg for the special event.

From 5 to 15 March 2016, these 12 group members, as well as 10 young Palestinian dancers from the Askar refugee camp, are meeting with students of the European School of Luxembourg, attending music, dance and cookery wookshops. This youth exchange programme has been funded by the European Union and organised by the Actions without Borders Committee of the European Schools of Luxembourg. The Committee brings together teachers, parents and students and aims to raise awareness amongst the school community of the problems faced by developing countries.
