On Thursday 10 December 2015, the Kirchberg headquarters of the European Investment Bank (EIB) will host a public conference focused on 'Financing the Circular Economy' ('Financer l'économie circulaire').
Jointly organised by the European Commission, the EIB and the Luxembourg Ministry of the Economy, this conference will aim to further involve the financial sector in the circular economy. The development of the circular economy is considered paramount in the European Union as a means of enhancing competitiveness, increasing employment, reducing or eliminating the costs of raw materials and alleviating the negative toll on the environment.
In Luxembourg, the city of Wiltz was designated earlier this year as a hotspot for pilot projects within the communal circular economy. 15,000 jobs currently fall into circular patterns in the Grand Duchy, primarily in the country's steel and construction industry. The full implementation of the large-scale circular economy could see over 2,200 jobs created for individuals in the Grand Duchy in the coming years. Additionally, a recent Benelux Committee agreement will see old paper re-established as a raw material rather than waste.
The development of the circular economy is expected to give rise to new business models requiring both classic and innovative financial instruments. With this in mind, Thursday's conference will aim to raise awareness within the business and finance sectors, assess future financial needs and determine whether existing financial instruments are suitable for supporting the transition to such an economy.
The first part of the day will begin at 09:30 and will be comprised of presentations from Prime Minister, Minister of State, Xavier Bettel; Secretary of State for the Economy, Francine Closener; European Commissioner for the Environment, Karmenu Vella; and President of the EIB, Werner Hoyer. The afternoon will constitute roundtable discussions allowing participants to benefit from the experience of leading experts in the field, from public and private sectors in Luxembourg and wider Europe.
The conference is open to the public and participation is free. Registration can be filled out by clicking here.
