Details: The Gaelic Sports Club Luxembourg has announced three weekends of Gaelic Games in Luxembourg

The Finals of the Benelux Gaelic Football Championship will take place in Stade Beggen, Luxembourg City this Saturday, 14 June 2014. This is the start of a great month of Gaelic Games in Luxembourg with an open day on Sunday, 22 June where adults and children can try out these sports from Ireland with help from two expert coaches who are visiting Luxembourg and the Luxembourg Hurling and Camogie Tournament on the 28 June.

The sports of Gaelic Football and Hurling are very popular in Ireland. These traditional exciting team sports have spread beyond Ireland and are now played all over the world. There are more than 70 clubs on the mainland of Europe who gather together in different cities to compete in tournaments during the European Gaelic Games season.

Luxembourg's Gaelic Football tournament is the longest-established Gaelic Games tournament on the mainland of Europe. Since 1995 teams have come to the Grand-Duchy to compete for the BlackStuff Cup, a beautiful replica of the Sam Maguire Cup that is awarded to the All-Ireland football champions that was commissioned by Phil and Cathy McKenna of the BlackStuff from a Craftsman in Ireland.

The Luxembourg men's team are performing well and have reached the finals of two of the three rounds of the Benelux Championship so far this year. They lost out on each occasion to a very strong Belgium side but training has been going well at the Stade Michel Wagner in Weimerskierch and Luxembourg are working towards a better outcome on home turf.

The Luxembourg women's team are enjoying a very active year after a few quiet years. The 'Luxembirds' have taken part in all the tournaments so far this year and played well. Luxembourg have one of the best records in the women's game in Europe, having won the European Championship four times between 2001 and 2006.

Matches will be played all day at FC Avenir Beggen's magnificent stadium which is on the number 19 bus route and has plenty of free parking. Entrance is free and as well as this fast-flowing sport spectators will enjoy traditional Irish music and Beggen's Buvette.

The tournament will finish with the prize-giving and a party in the BlackStuff; all are welcome.
