Details: The 5th annual Festival Cinéma du Sud will take place partly in spring and partly in autumn this year, with the spring screenings on 22, 24, 28 and 30 April 2014, with each screening being followed by a debate on the film in question and the issues raised.
Family farming - Who will feed the world of tomorrow ?
Screenings will be held at Ciné Utopia in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg, with the organisation being shared among a consortium of NGOs that focus on the topic of family farming. In various films we will see concrete examples of how family farming contributes significantly to the eradication of hunger and the protection of the environment in French Guiana, Guatemala, Senegal, India, Brazil and Mali, as well as Italy and Germany.
The International Year of Family Farming 2014 aims to raise the profile of family farming and put it at the centre of environmental and social agricultural policies in national action programmes to promote the transition to a more fair and balanced development.
What is family farming?
Family agriculture includes all agricultural activities based on the family, in relation to many aspects of rural development. Managed by a family, it is mainly based on family labour - both men and women. It is the primary source of employment and food supply, with more than 500 million family farms in the world.
This theme is at the heart of current issues because it is constantly being threatened. Family agriculture suffers from a negative image in the eyes of policymakers both South and North. We often hear that it is not profitable from an economic point of view and no longer has a place in this changing world. The result, small producers in the South and the North are often at an impasse faced with industrial farms. These are often very powerful, they have the means to acquire a lot of land and are increasingly supported by local governments - to the detriment of small farmers. The result is a paradoxical situation in which 70% of people in the world suffering from food insecurity are small local producers.
It is therefore necessary to rethink the food production system and favour a sustainable system for agriculture producers, not only to reduce the North / South inequalities and hunger in the world, but also to preserve the natural resources of this endangered planet.
Around the world we are daily faced with the destruction of our natural resources and the fact that our food sovereignty is challenged by an agro-food industry. To cope, many movements are being created around the world to show that "production without destruction" is possible. The "Cinéma du Sud" festival show some local issues and initiatives in four evening discussions.
