Details: David Goldrake and Véronique Faber will present “Weyer le Mystérieux” (1872 – 1921) on Tuesday 4 February 2014 from 19:30 at the Kulturzentrum "Beim Nëssert" (14 rue de Schifflange, L-3316 Bergem Bergem).
The two magic history aficionados, illusionist David Goldrake and author Véronique Faber, will talk about the strongman and magician Alex Weyer, who was born as Jean-Pierre Decker on 4 February 1872 in Mondercange.
A mix of talk and demonstrations will guide you through Weyer's life, who was also known as "The Great Alex Weyer". His life was full of successes and failures. An engaging voyage from Luxembourg to New York and Cairo...
What is known about Weyer is from books and magazines and, more interestingly, from his correspondence with one of the most famous magicians of all times - Harry Houdini.
Luxembourg resident Véronique Faber started getting involved in the history of magic seven years ago and researched the story of Alex Weyer. Now Véronique has finally got it all together in a book, which is to be published soon following a crowdfunding appeal.
The book is the story of Alex Weyer, a magician during the Golden Age of Magic (ca. 1875–1948). He started off with a strongman act and ended up traveling the world with his magic show. He charmed the aristocracy of Europe, walked the stage of the Moulin Rouge in Paris and entertained Australian troops in Egypt during World War I.
He was billed as an American conjurer under the title The Great Alex Weyer, as a French prestidigitateur with the title "Weyer Le Mystérieux", and as a Belgian mystifier called "Professeur Weyer". He was a close friend of the most famous escape artist and magician of all time, Harry Houdini.
The presentation will be made in Luxembourgish.
